Honda Clarity Electric is an electric sedan in the D segment with four-wheel drive. It is among three variants of Clarity having varying powertrains. The official launch of the car took place in the New York Auto Show in April 2017.

In addition to the hybrid representation, a completely electrified brother of the hybrid car saw the light of day as well the Clarity Electric. Honda preferred to remain a little bit out of the EV arms race and convince the potential customers of the car’s appearance and features: the Clarity Electric does not impress with the record range numbers or even raw power. An electric motor with 161 hp and 300 Nm of torque is used to propel, and the driving range of 25.5 kWh of lithium-ion battery is sufficient (the 143 kilometers of driving range according to the U.S. EPA cycle). Charging the battery using a DC fast charger takes half an hour to charge the battery to 80 percent, but fully charges it in 3.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet.

On the handling part, the Clarity Electric can proudly announce almost perfect weight distribution 51/49 to the front axle. It is a MacPherson struts front suspension and an independent multi-link rear. The car has ventilated disc brakes up front and the standard disc brakes in the rear.

The visual impression of the car is nearly similar to its hybrid counterpart. The difference between the two is mostly in the number of grille design (the top part of the hybrid is mesh-pattern, the EV has what looks to be an extension of the hood), the taillights (red on the hybrid, the Clarity Electric has white) and, predictably, the number of fuel/charge doors (two on the hybrid, one on the EV). The other difference lies within: even though the exterior dimensions are the same (length 4,895 mm, width 1,877 mm, height 1,478 mm, wheelbase 2,750 mm), the amounts of the trunks are different: 405 liters in the EV and 439 in the hybrid.

The Clarity is similarly designed to remind its interior design that the car is a green technology. Eighty percent of the cabin trim is made on recycled materials. A multi-section Power/Charge meter display is located in front of the driver that displays the speed, power being used, remaining charge etc. There is an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen on the center console. In place of a gear selector, four buttons are used, P, R, N, D. And using the two upper buttons, Econ and Sport, you can adjust the intensity of the response of the powertrain. The back seat will accommodate three adults: it is nearly 20 mm broader than the back seat of the Honda Accord.

The Clarity Electric comes in one, but very lavish, trim. It has seven airbags, Honda Sensing family of active driving assists (adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automatic braking), full LEDs, leather interior, rearview camera, right-side blind-spot camera system (LaneWatch), keyless entry, power-adjustable and heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and the capability to operate the climate system remotely through the smartphone.
