2019 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is a front-wheel-drive D-segment sedan with a hybrid powertrain. It is one of three Honda Clarity variations with different powertrains. The car was officially unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2017.

Following the Clarity Fuel Cell model, which runs on electricity generated from hydrogen and air, Honda decided to expand its eco-friendly lineup. The Honda Clarity PHEV is a hybrid vehicle driven by a 1.5-liter VTEC gasoline engine operating on the fuel-efficient Atkinson cycle and an electric motor. The ICE produces 103 hp and 134 Nm of torque, while the electric motor delivers 181 hp and 315 Nm. Total system output is 212 hp. It is paired with an E-CVT. The gasoline engine can either recharge the 17 kWh battery or send torque directly to the front wheels. From a 120-volt outlet, the battery charges fully in 12 hours, and using a 240-volt charger takes only 2.5 hours.

This entire “arsenal” is designed to make the car more efficient. Honda provides results based on the U.S. EPA cycle: the claimed combined fuel consumption for the Clarity PHEV is 2.13 liters per 100 km. With a 7-gallon (26.5-liter) fuel tank, the car—using both electric drive and the ICE—can travel nearly 550 km. Another nice bonus is the ability to run on electric power alone: you can drive 76 km using only the battery (and considering that many drivers don’t even cover that distance in a day—commuting to work and back, for example—this is a significant advantage for the Clarity hybrid).

Visually, the car “gives away” its nature with a distinctive (for a sedan) rear shape and a cut-off line for the rear wheel arches—solutions intended to improve aerodynamic drag. In addition, attention is drawn to two doors on the left side (the first, with a Plug-In Hybrid badge, is for the charging cable; the second, in the usual place, is the fuel filler door), as well as air ducts integrated into the rear doors.

Inside, the driver is greeted by a fully digital instrument display (left—battery charge level, right—fuel level, center—a tachometer with additional markings) and steering-wheel paddles that in the Clarity act as selectors for battery regeneration intensity (4 levels). Instead of a gear lever, there are four buttons: P, R, N, D, along with buttons to select powertrain modes Econ, Sport, and HV—a mode that increases the amount of engine energy used to recharge the battery. In the middle of the center console is an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. As for rear passengers, the car is designed to carry three on the rear bench. The rear seat can fold 60/40, providing access to a 439-liter trunk.

The Clarity PHEV is the only model in the Clarity lineup offered in two trims: Standard and Touring. The first provides 18-inch wheels, full LED automatic lighting, an infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, an 8-speaker audio system, a rearview camera, heated front seats, keyless entry, and a push-button start. The Honda Sensing suite is a set of active-safety systems: adaptive cruise control, lane-marking monitoring and lane-keeping assist, and automatic braking. In the Touring trim, this is complemented by remote climate control via smartphone, perforated leather upholstery, navigation, and power-adjustable front seats.
