2018 Honda Passport is a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive crossover of K3 category. The third generation of the model was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the autumn of 2018 and in the United States the model was put on sale in the first quarter of 2019.

Third generation? Seriously? What about the first two? Such questions might come to the mind of most people that are not fans of America-market Hondas. So here’s a bit of history. In 1993, as it aggressively diversified in the U.S. market, the Japanese automaker resorted to badge engineering and launched the body-on-frame Honda Passport SUV, a car that was basically a light-extensively restyled version of the Isuzu Rodeo (or the Opel Frontera). Still in this guise, the SUV remained on the market until 2002, making a generation change in 1998. And then there is the third generation Passport offered by the Japanese 16 years later that, beyond the similar name, bears no similarity to the earlier two.

But this time around, calling the crossover completely standalone does not work either. It takes but a glance to make one see that it is a shorter version of the Pilot. The two vehicles even have the body similar and the only difference is the different front-bumper, and other rear-light styling. And dimensions: as the rear overhang was reduced, the total length was reduced by 4,991 mm to 4,839 mm, therefore, the third row of seats had to be dropped. But there is no lack of room among the remaining passengers–the crossovers have the same 2,820 mm. wheelbase as their bigger brother. With these cosmetic alterations, however, the Passport appears tighter and more aggressive than its bigger sibling.
